Evidence That Public Education Has Failed Us
Ever look around and wonder, in a land in which a hefty chunk of our tax dollars is being spent on implenting free public education, testing new educational theories and arguing for more progressive educational policies, why are so many people acting like they never learned anything at all in school? As an educator, perhaps I wonder about this more than most. But on that tack, here’s a list of some random observations that may give credence to that idea that public education has failed us. The number of people who blame genes and big bones for their obesity
The number of people who still think they can drive better when drunk
The number of people who don’t know when to properly use “there”, “their” and “they’re” in a sentence
The number of people completely ignorant of how to use the semicolon
The number of people who still think Iraq was complicit in 911
The number of people who think vaccinations are a government conspiracy
The number of people who believe they are immune to the negative consequences of their smoking
The number of people who feel that a $50 million lottery jackpot is worth their $1 investment, but that a $5 million jackpot is not
The number of people who “couldn’t care less” about this list, but who will nonetheless say that they “could” care less
The number of people who don’t realize that a single line waiting for many bank tellers is more efficient than a single line in front of each bank teller
